Jan 17, Video Games And Obesity

video games and obesity

It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that video games and obesity are linked. I have to admit that I am a little jealous and grateful at the same time that the technology of today was not around when I was a child. Video games can be fun and are definitely addictive.

Overweight children generally live more sedentary lifestyles and are socially less active. They have more idle time and since video games can be so addictive they find themselves playing games for entertainment. The implications of this is that playing video games could cause obesity rather than obesity being a cause of playing video games.

Comparing video games and obesity to television viewing it would seem fairly obvious that television viewing is the worse of the two evils.

Most traditional video games require the use of two hands to operate the game controller. One could theorize that while playing video games children are snacking less and are not exposed to advertisements promoting unhealthy foods. Of course, the downside to this theory is the ?pause? button.

Additionally studies have shown that heavier children spend more time in sedentary activities than thinner kids do. Children with lower body mass indexes are more likely to use computers for non-game purposes, and their video game usage varies.

Because of video games and obesity the manufacturers of electronic games have had a bad reputation over the years. But just like any good business they have come up with a solution that may very well be an answer to childhood obesity. Integrated game consoles such as Nintendo Wii have opened up a whole new perspective on physical activity.

?Children burn more than four times as many calories per minute playing an active video game than playing a seated game, and their heart rate is also significantly higher with the active game?, according to a report in the September issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

The Nintendo Wii game is user friendly and entertaining for everyone including spectators. It comes with 5 sports games: bowling, golf, boxing, tennis, and baseball along with other features such as a body mass index calculator and a tracking system for up to 8 users. The game is played by using the controller in a similar fashion as you would a bowling ball or golf club.

Another popular game is the XaviX gaming system. Quite similar to the Nintendo Wii system except it also sports games that involve more physical activity such as jogging by use of a gaming mat called the XaviX-J-Mat.

Integrated video games do come with a price tag but when it comes to your childs health it is worth the investment. Extertainment games could pay for themselves when you consider the savings from medical bills, emergency room visits, and other costs associated with obesity treatment. If you find yourself in a no win situation with the kids and video games this may be a positive solution for the whole family to enjoy.

Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, "the power of technological progress can be converted from foe to friend with regard to the health of children" by being tapped to provide a meaningful source of physical activity (Reinberg, HealthDay, 9/1/08; Mellecker/McManus, Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, September 2008]). While these may prove to be beneficial, parents should encourage outdoor activity to further help prevent obesity.

Oct 26, school lunch

Hello all...

Well let me start by saying from what my seven year old sees school lunch in our town has improved. they offer fresh fruits and vegetables.

I think this is wonderful but wish there was some way to eliminate the processed burgers and chicken nugget, patties and whatever else they con cock out of it. Breakfast for lunch??? does anyone else think this is ridiculous?

I believe the school lunch programs plays a major effect in our children s obesity. So many Americans receive free breakfast and lunch from the government or a reduced fee and this makes it easier for us to feed our children, yet, what are we subjecting them to?

EVERYONE should consider food that is all natural and try to shop local grown I know organic can be a little more expensive right now, but once people recognize what is good for us to eat and what is not then may be organic will become cheaper.

We are the consumers. Supply and demand is what the corporates are all about. If we demand healthier food they will supply healthier food.

Mar 7, Brilliant 16 Year Old

Hi,

our son is such a great kid..he does not get into the typical trouble that most teens do (so far) but he is addicted to his computer game and driving his car. He is a brilliant 16 year old (5.0) GPA student who is very focused on his goals for the future academic college years.

But he has no desire to lose the 60lbs that he is over weight. He is only 5'6 and weighs at least 235lb's. We know as parents we should probably take away his car and computer games/computer in general until he learns to eat right and EXERCISE.

He constantly tells us that he doesn't understand our problem when he is just fine with his huge body and has no problem being the height and weight he is.

We know that he has no idea (although he will be a Pre-Med student in less than a year) that he is setting himself up for some really tough issues in his young adult life.

His Father is Pre-Diabetic and must control it with diet and exercise. His mother (me) has cardiovascular disease and at age 49 have already had 2 open heart surgeries to repair left main 97% block and then another open Heart surgery 3 months later to perform a bypass.

We are frightened that our brilliant 16 year old is headed down the wrong path for good health, but at the same time, do not want to punish such a wonderful mind and spirit.

He is really a great person but lacks self-motivation to get control of his obesity and terrible eating habits.

We (his parents) do not over eat and walk everyday except on Sundays, unfortunately our brilliant 16 year old son will not come along.

He has a physical with blood work coming up at the end of March and his Doctor has been with him since he was born.

We can only pray that the Doc "scares" him in a way that wakes him up and makes him realize that he is in for some hard times down the road if he doesn't get things under control and start having some self-respect about his looks his health.

Any suggestions other than what we have mentioned sure would be helpful Thank You - scared parents in N. CA

Response:

Wow! It sounds like you really do have a brilliant 16 year old son. Talking about Pre-Med at 16?

Wouldn't it be great if you could get your Doctor to find a way to divert that brilliancy into "opening his eyes" to the real danger that lurks.

He wants to be a doctor himself and help people with medical issues. Perhaps a Heart to Heart talk about life goals and the importance of setting a good example will get him to "thinking" and hopefully acting upon those thoughts. Such as: Joining you on your walks.

We wish you and your brilliant 16 year old success. Check back with us on his progress.

There is a page on this web site about a product that we have had tons of positive feed back on. Its called Junior Slim.

You might want to try it out but please don't waste your money unless your son is willing to get motivated and get moving. If he is you both may be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Mar 8, CMS Nightmare

by Steve
(Maryland)

As someone who has worked as an SEO Professional for several years, I've seen and worked with almost every CMS system you can possible imagine!

If you have ever built a webpage before, think about how long it took you to click on the "add page" button, to get started building a new page. Well, I worked with a CMS nightmare that required 15 minutes, just to get to where you can BEGIN building a page! And if you ever wanted to make the tiniest change to the page, you had to start all over again!

One decent CMS I've seen is WordPress. However, I find myself spending more time finding plugins that I need than actually working on my website. On top of that, I'm constantly wasting time on upgrading everything.

Because of the popularity of WordPress, it's prone to hackers. So if you don't upgrade right away, you are in serious danger of getting your website hacked, because it's public knowledge what was wrong/fixed with the previous version!

I would say hands-down the best CMS I've used to date is the program you mentioned, Site Build It!.

I like it because everything comes included, and everything has detailed step-by-step instructions on how to get it working properly.

If you are doing your research on the company, completely ignore any site build it scam articles you come across. This was an attack against them by sploggers with nothing better to do with their time.

I've had tremendous success with their products, and I don't know anyone who hasn't been pleased with the results when they've put in the effort.

Yes, it takes a little bit of effort. But everything worthwhile in life takes some effort. As my Dad always told me, "if it was easy, everyone would do it!"

If you're interested in building a website, give it a try. I'm glad I did!

Response:

Thanks for the input Steve. I couldn't agree more! Perhaps your submission will help other people who are "on the fence" about SBI to Give It A Try.

Jan 17, Obesity In America

obesity in america

Obesity in America is a common topic in the news today mainly because as Americans we are an overweight nation. We eat too many meals away from home, make poor choices from the menus, and are not active enough to burn the high calories that are consumed daily. Obesity affects everybody regardless of race, religion, or state.

Child obesity in America affects over fifteen percent of adolescents and children over the age of six. Adult obesity occurs in over one-third of all Americans. As a nation we are notorious for making unhealthy food choices which puts us at risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and many other diseases. The easiest method to determine if you are overweight or obese is the body mass index calculator.

Why is obesity in America an epidemic? There are numerous reasons but the main causes are poor diet and exercise. Americans cook fewer meals at home than they did in the past which leads to a increased intake of high fat and high sodium foods.

The typical restaurant in America serves portions that are super sized and high in calories. Even ordering a salad would surprise you after checking the ingredients in the dressing.

Many people like to have a soda before their meal arrives and that sixteen ounce beverage starts your caloric intake at 194.

Many consumers are aware of food labeling and restaurants are required to make food labeling available to the consumer. You'd be hard pressed to find the labeling though. If it is a fast food restaurant you might find it on the paper insert of the serving tray.

The only problem is it might be too late since you already ordered your meal and you are probably in a hurry - that's why it is called fast food. So searching for the labeling is not a top priority.

Also contributing to obesity in America is the processed foods, deep fat frying, and other flavor enhancers used by restaurants. The biggest problem is the outrageous portion sizes that encourage the intake of empty calories.

Health risks associated with obesity in America

Type II DiabetesHypertensionHigh CholesterolLiver ProblemsAsthemaCancerCardiovascular DiseaseSleep ApneaHeart AttackStrokePsychological DisordersDepression

Eating at home has many benefits aside from it is less expensive that ordering out. You control the types of foods being served and know the ingredients. You control the portion sizes and eating as a family gives you the opportunity to spend quality time together and bond.

Tips for healthy eating habits:

Be willing to experiment by eating a variety of nutritious foodsProvide three healthy meals a day and create a regular mealtime for the family. Afternoon snacks are fine as long as they are nutritious ( fruit or vegetables) and are not meant to be a meal.Refrain from eating after dinner. No midnight snacks. And never eat large amounts of food at once.Know your families serving size and provide just enough to satisfy their needs.Enjoy your mealtime as a family avoiding confrontation. Unnecessary stress at mealtime can lead to emotional overeating.Find creative ways of dealing with emotions avoiding food as a solution.Establish a set location for food consumption in the home. Preferably the dinner table. This will avoid eating in front of the TV, computer, or bedrooms.Keep only snacks in the home that are high in nutrients and make them readily available. Wash and slice fruits and vegetables and be sure there is easy access to them.Avoid buying problem foods like doughnuts and cookies. If you do keep them in the pantry out of sight. Never use food as a reward for good behavior. Some people eat out of sheer boredom or because they were enticed by the food advertisement on TV. Learn to eat only when you are truly hungry and remind yourself that a snack is not a meal. In other words, eating a full bag of carrots is not necessary. But it is much healthier than a full bag of chips

Obesity in America is an epidemic that ranks second in preventable deaths right behind cigarette smoking. We are approaching the first generation in our history that will have a lower life expectancy than their parents. Changes in lifestyles, diet, and exercise are needed to combat obesity. Preventing obesity is much easier than treating obesity.

Jan 17, Parents of Obese Children

Parents of Obese Children

Parents of obese children are often overweight or obese themselves. In fact having one or more obese parent is considered an early indicator of childhood obesity.

Even if they are not obese and maintain normal weight, parents are under a lot of societal pressure to deal with their childrens weight issues. There have even been radical calls for punishing parents who allow their children to become obese. Of course, these kinds of responses to the problem do not present useful solutions, and only cause more intense emotional responses.

new! What are your biggest struggles with parenting an overweight child? Join our new forum for our readers. It's free, fun, and easy to do. click here to jump down and tell your story. Or here for what others have shared.

Obesity can be the result of more than just nutrition. Obesity can be the result of one or more factors, including poor nutrition, lack of exercise, an inherited propensity to gain weight, and growth problems.

The first step that parents should take is to have the child examined by a doctor to make sure there are not health issues involved other than poor nutrition. If the child is obese strictly due to eating the wrong kinds of foods, it is time for the parents to begin changing the family lifestyle.

Clearing Out the Pantry

Nutrition is, quite simply, a family affair. If you open the pantry and find it loaded with junk food like chips, candy bars and cookies, then it isn't hard to understand why the children are eating the wrong snack foods. Unhealthy snacking is one of the main culprits when it comes to the causes of childhood obesity. If meals are eaten on the run, or at fast food restaurants, the children come to believe this is a normal dietary lifestyle.

Parents can teach children how to lose weight in a healthy manner by making several changes in the family lifestyles. First, the pantry needs to be cleaned out and refilled with only healthy foods. There should be easy access to fruit and low-fat and low-sugar snacks. Parents need to change their eating habits to match their children's. They can change with the child by cooking balanced meals, eating as a family , limiting junk food forages, and losing excess weight.

In addition, parents of obese children can pack healthy school lunches. At school obese children are often bullied and teased, which causes self-esteem problems. Sending your children to school with a healthy lunch sends a message that the child is dealing with his or her weight problem. It gives a sense of control over their life that is important for maintaining self-esteem.

Exercising as a Family

In addition to changing eating patterns, parents of obese children also need to help their children increase their activity levels. The best way to begin this program is to do physical activities together as a family. For example the family can take a walk together after dinner each evening. Some families purchase a family membership at the gym and attend together on a regular basis.

Parents of obese children need to make sure they are setting the right example by living a healthy lifestyle themselves.
